Let’s talk about a very specific skill set that I feel doesn’t get enough credit on resumes. It’s not Excel, it’s not CPR, and it’s definitely not “conflict resolution.” It is the ancient, sacred art of Playing It Cool While Absolutely Noting Everything.
I saw a quote recently that just—spoke to my soul. It said: “ima always play it cool but everything noted.”
And I have never felt more seen in my life.
Because here’s the thing about me (and probably you, if you’re reading this): I am not always going to give you the reaction you are fishing for. I am not going to flip a table. I am not going to send the paragraph text (okay, sometimes I send the paragraph text, but I’m working on it). Most of the time, I am going to smile, nod, sip my drink, and file that information away into a mental cabinet that is meticulously organized, color-coded, and backed up to the cloud.
We live in a world where everyone wants a reaction. People want to see you sweat. They want to see you bothered. Whether it’s that coworker who makes “helpful suggestions” that are actually just insults wrapped in glitter, or the person you’re dating who thinks being “mysterious” (read: inconsistent) is cute, or the frenemy who asks, “Are you really wearing that?”
When that happens, you have two choices.
1. Explode: This is messy. It ruins your makeup. It raises your blood pressure.
2. The Tina Method: You look them dead in the eye, you smile that unbothered smile, and you say, “Yeah, I love this outfit!”
But internally? Oh, internally, the investigation board has been updated. The red string is connecting the pushpins. Everything is noted.
Don’t get it twisted—this isn’t about being a doormat. Playing it cool doesn’t mean you’re letting things slide. It means you are conserving your energy for things that actually matter.
I used to think I had to address every single slight immediately. If you acted funny, I was going to ask, “Why are you acting funny?” If the vibe was off, I was going to fix it. But I realized something as I got older (and wiser, and busier): Not everyone deserves your tuition. I am not here to teach you how to treat people.
If I have to explain to you why you shouldn’t be shady, then you’re already too far gone. So instead, I play it cool.
• You want to take six hours to text back but post on your story? Cool. Noted.
• You want to make a joke at my expense in front of a group? Cool. Noted.
• You want to act like you’re the main character and I’m just an NPC in your life? Cool. Noted.
I’m not going to fight you for a spot in your life. I’m just going to adjust your spot in mine. That’s the power of the note. It’s not about revenge; it’s about recalibration.
Let’s discuss the sheer capacity of the brain when it’s in “Observation Mode.” My brain might forget where I put my keys. It might forget what I walked into the kitchen for. But does it forget that backhanded comment you made three Tuesdays ago at 4:15 PM? Absolutely not.
It’s actually scary. I have mental receipts from 2018. I have screenshots stored in my hippocampus.
There is something satisfying about sitting on information. You know? Just letting people lie to you when you already know the truth. It’s like watching a movie where you know the twist ending. You’re just sitting there with your popcorn, watching them perform, thinking, “Wow, look at that commitment to the role. Bravo.”
Playing it cool gives you the upper hand. When you react emotionally, you show your cards. You show people what hurts you, what triggers you, and what they can use against you. When you play it cool, you are a fortress. You are an enigma. You are unshakeable.
And the best part? When you finally do make a move—whether it’s cutting them off, changing the dynamic, or just walking away—they are always shocked.
“Wait, I thought we were cool? You never said anything!”
I didn’t have to say anything. I was taking notes. And the class is dismissed.
Ultimately, this is about peace. My peace is too expensive to waste on cheap drama.
Playing it cool is a boundary. It’s a way of saying, “I see you. I see exactly who you are. And because I see who you are, I’m not going to let you drag me down to your level.”
So, to all the messy people, the drama kings, and the chaotic energies out there: Go ahead. Do your thing. Spin your narratives. Play your games.
I’ma always play it cool. I’m going to keep glowing, keep growing, and keep minding my business. But just know, behind this chill exterior, the court stenographer in my head is typing at 100 words per minute.
Everything. Is. Noted.
Love,
Tina
