Let’s get real for a second. Between the twelve-hour shifts where I’m literally keeping humans alive, the endless laundry mountain that seems to be self-replicating in the hallway, and trying to remember if I actually drank water today or just thought about it—I don’t have a lot of room left in my brain for nonsense. But lately, I’ve been seeing this one specific brand of nonsense everywhere, and we need to talk about it.
I saw a post the other day that hit the nail so hard on the head it practically drove it through the floorboards. It said: “A cheating man will protect the woman he’s cheating with before he protects his OWN woman.”
And honestly? My first thought was, “Ouch.” My second thought was, “Where is the lie?”
It’s a wild phenomenon, isn’t it? You can’t get him to protect the leftovers in the fridge from growing a science experiment, but the second there’s a “side situation” involved, suddenly he’s a high-level security operative.
He’ll guard her name like it’s a state secret. He’ll defend her “privacy” with more passion than he’s ever used to defend your honor at a family Thanksgiving. If you even mention her name, he’s suddenly a defense attorney, a bodyguard, and a gaslighting extraordinaire all rolled into one.
He’s out here playing The Secret Service for someone who shouldn’t even be in the building, while you—the one who’s actually been in the trenches, doing the work, and probably knowing exactly how he likes his coffee—are left standing outside in the rain.
Here’s the part that really trips us up: We think he’s protecting her because she’s special. We think, “Wow, he must really love this person to go to such lengths.”
But let me tell you something from a woman who has seen it all: He’s not protecting her. He’s protecting the lie.
Exposure is his greatest enemy. In his mind, she isn’t a person; she’s a vault where he keeps his ego and his secrets. If he lets you see her—really see the situation for what it is—the whole house of cards falls down. He’d rather minimize her role and make you feel “crazy” (the favorite word of a man with something to hide) than face the music.
Protecting the truth requires accountability. And accountability? That sounds a lot like work. Protecting the lie only requires betrayal, and unfortunately, some people find that path much easier to walk.
When a man gets defensive, angry, or dismissive of your pain, he isn’t choosing her over you. He’s choosing himself over integrity.
As a nurse, I see “damage control” every day. But usually, it’s about fixing a wound, not hiding the fact that you’re the one who caused it. A man who truly loves you doesn’t just protect you from the world; he protects you from himself. He protects your heart, your peace, and your dignity.
If he’s spending more energy guarding a secret than he is guarding your happiness, that’s all the diagnostic information you need.
Life is too short to be the “Main Character” in a story where you’re being treated like a supporting role in someone else’s drama. Whether you’re a Leo like me (we don’t do “second best” very well, do we?) or just a person who values their sanity, remember this:
You deserve someone who protects your heart, not the damage they’re causing behind your back.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a cold cup of coffee calling my name and a toddler who just figured out how to open the “child-proof” cabinets.
Stay strong, stay spicy, and for the love of everything, stay away from the gaslighters.
