The New “Tall, Dark, and Handsome” is Actually Just “Calm, Clear, and Listening”

The New “Tall, Dark, and Handsome” is Actually Just “Calm, Clear, and Listening”

Okay, I saw this meme today and I have never felt more seen, attacked, and spiritually aligned in my entire life. Can we talk about this? Because I feel like we need to talk about this.

I remember my early 20s. Back then, my “type” was essentially: Has a pulse, wears a backward baseball cap, and looks like he might ruin my life. If he texted back within three business days, I was planning the wedding. The bar was in hell. Actually, there was no bar. It was a tavern in the underworld.

But now? Now that I’m 33, a mom, a nurse, and just generally trying to survive the chaos of existence without losing my mind? The criteria has shifted. Drastically.

Let me tell you, nothing—and I mean nothing—is sexier than a man who can sit down, look you in the eye, and say, “I hear what you’re saying, and I understand why you feel that way,” without getting defensive or trying to fix it immediately.

Forget six-pack abs. Do you have six-pack emotional regulation skills? Can you communicate your feelings without shutting down like a moody teenager? Because that is the kind of stuff that makes me want to lock the door and throw away the key.

Being a Leo, obviously, I thrive on attention. I want the worship. I want the drama (sometimes). But deep down, the Leo loyalty just wants security. And in the year of our Lord 2026, security looks like comprehension.

Think about it. I spend 12 hours a day at the hospital. I am running around, managing patients, dealing with doctors, and listening to everyone else’s problems. My brain is fried. My feet hurt. I am fueled entirely by anxiety and that Tesora iced coffee from Philz. When I come home to Mo, or when I’m dealing with friends, I don’t want to play guessing games. I don’t want to decode passive-aggressive silence.

I want Emotional Intelligence.

I want the kind of communication where we don’t have to have a blowout fight just to get to the point. I want the “Hey, I noticed you’re stressed, what can I take off your plate?” energy. That is top-tier romance. That is better than flowers. (Okay, don’t stop buying me flowers, but you get the point).

It’s funny how your definition of “turned on” changes.

• At 22: “He plays guitar in a band.”

• At 33: “He noticed the dishwasher was full and emptied it without being asked, and then asked me how my day was and actually waited for the answer.” -> Swoon.

I think we are all just so tired of the games. We’re raising kids (shoutout to Noah for keeping me on my toes), we’re working, we’re trying to have social lives. We don’t have the bandwidth for emotional unavailability anymore.

So, to the men out there: If you want to impress a woman in her 30s, don’t send a gym selfie. Send a text that says, “I understand your perspective, let’s talk about it tonight.”

Because honestly? That level of competency? It’s dangerous. It’s lethal. And it’s the only thing I’m signing up for.

Stay emotionally intelligent, friends.
