Why He’ll Give You a Baby, But Not a Last Name

Why He’ll Give You a Baby, But Not a Last Name

Hey y’all. It’s Tina.

Grab your beverage of choice. Coffee, wine, a green smoothie if you’re trying to cleanse your spirit—whatever you need. Maybe grab a tissue, too. Because today? Today we are going to the church of uncomfortable truths. We are sitting in the front pew, and honestly, this sermon isn’t just going to pinch; it’s going to bruise a little.

We need to talk about the dating phenomenon that has kept me, my group chat, and probably half of you reading this up at night, staring at the ceiling fan while the man beside you sleeps soundly.

It’s the paradox of the “Almost” guy.

You know the one. He texts you “Good morning” every day without fail. He eats your cooking like it’s the only sustenance he’s ever known. He knows exactly how to touch you, how to calm you down, how to make you laugh until your stomach hurts. You have chemistry that could power a small city. But when you bring up the “M” word (Marriage) or the “C” word (Commitment), the air leaves the room. He acts like you’re speaking a language he has never heard.

And yet—and here is the kicker that breaks your heart in slow motion—he is perfectly fine with the idea of having a child with you. Or maybe, he has already made you a mother. He gave you his name on a birth certificate, but he won’t give it to you.

It begs the question that makes our brains short-circuit and our pillows wet at 2 AM: Why will he sleep with you, live with you, and even make you a baby mother, but he refuses to wife you up?

Let’s peel back the layers of this mess, shall we? Even if our hands shake while we do it.

Here is something men know that they rarely say out loud, and hearing it feels like a physical blow: They have categories. And sometimes, those categories make absolutely no sense to us rational, heart-led women.

We assume that a child is the ultimate commitment. I mean, you can divorce a wife. You can split assets. You can delete photos. But a child? That is a biological tether for the rest of eternity. It is blood. So, in our minds, if he’s willing to create a life with us, surely he wants to share a life with us, right?

Wrong. And God, that “wrong” hurts.

To a certain type of emotionally unavailable man, Marriage and Parenthood represent two totally different types of responsibility.

Marriage means he has to answer to an equal. A wife has the authority to check him. A wife expects partnership, compromise, and—terrifyingly for him—transparency. A wife is a mirror who sees him every day, flaws and all, and demands he level up. Marriage is a lifestyle change. It requires him to look at you and say, “I choose you, above all others, forever.”

Being a Baby Daddy, on the other hand? To him, that’s a legacy without the leash.

I know, I know. It sounds harsh. But think about the lonely nights you spent pregnant, rubbing your own back. If he makes you a mother but keeps you a “girlfriend” (or worse, a “situation”), he gets to have his lineage carried on. He gets the “fun” parts of playing Dad at the park on Saturdays. But he doesn’t have to deal with the legal and emotional heavy lifting of being a Husband on a Tuesday night when the world is falling apart.

He wants the legacy, but he doesn’t want the partnership. He wants the child, but he doesn’t want the mother—not really. Not in the way you need.

Let’s be real for a second. This is the part where I need you to be gentle with yourself.

Sometimes, we are just too good to them.

We give them the wife experience at the girlfriend price. We cook, we clean, we listen to their dreams, we support their hustles, and we rock their worlds in the bedroom. We build them up from nothing. We do all of this hoping that one day, he will look over at us washing dishes or rocking the baby and think, This is it. She is the one.

But here is the jagged pill we have to swallow: Why would he buy the cow if the milk is free, delivered to his door, and comes with a side of unconditional love he hasn’t earned?

If he can sleep with you and get all his emotional needs met without putting a ring on it, some men will simply coast. And if a baby happens? To him, that just locks you down. It doesn’t necessarily lock him down.

He knows you’re a good woman. He knows you’ll be a great mother. He trusts you with his DNA. But he doesn’t see you as the woman he wants to build an empire with. He sees you as the woman who makes his current life comfortable.

And the most painful part? You are the placeholder. You are the one keeping his heart warm and his bed made until he feels “ready” to marry someone else. Someone who didn’t have to beg. Someone who didn’t have to prove her worth for five years. Someone who just walked in and got the ring you bled for.

“I’m just not ready for marriage yet.”

“I need to get my finances right first.”

“I don’t believe in a piece of paper.”

We’ve heard the scripts, haven’t we? I’ve bought throw pillows that have lasted longer than some of these men’s promises to “get ready.”

Here is the truth, and I need you to let this sink into your bones: A man who wants to marry you will marry you with $50 in his bank account and a paper clip ring if he has to. He will want to lock that down because he is terrified another man will realize what a catch you are. He wouldn’t risk leaving you on the market for a single day.

When he says he’s “not ready” for marriage but is reckless enough to risk (or encourage) pregnancy, what he is saying is: “I am okay with permanent consequences, as long as they fall mostly on your shoulders.”

Because let’s be honest, ladies. Who bears the brunt of the “Baby Mother” life? We do. The body changes, the stretch marks, the career pauses, the midnight feedings where you cry silently so you don’t wake the baby. He can dip in and out. Being a husband requires him to stay in the room. Being a baby father allows him to step out to the “store” and come back whenever he feels like it.

Now, I have to turn the mirror on us for a second. (Don’t throw your phone at me, I say this with love, and I say this because I’ve been there).

Sometimes, deep down, in the quietest parts of our hearts, we think a baby will change him. We think, “Once he sees his son/daughter, he’ll step up. He’ll become the man I know he can be. We’ll be a family. He’ll finally see me.”

We romanticize the struggle. We think we can love the commitment out of him. We think if we just love him harder, he will finally choose us.

But a baby doesn’t fix a broken relationship; it acts like a magnifying glass. If he was selfish before the baby, he will be selfish with the baby. If he didn’t respect your time before, he won’t respect it when you’re sleep-deprived and covered in spit-up.

By agreeing to (or sliding into) motherhood without the covenant of marriage, we often hand over our power. We give him the ultimate gift—a piece of our soul, a child—without demanding the ultimate respect—commitment.

And there is no loneliness quite like holding a baby that looks just like him, waiting for a man who is only halfway there.

If you are reading this and your stomach is in knots, and your eyes are burning because this sounds like your life, take a breath. Just breathe.

You are not stupid. You are not damaged goods. You are a human being who loved hard. You loved with your whole heart, and you hoped that love would be returned in the same currency. That is nothing to be ashamed of.

But we have to stop pricing ourselves at a discount. We have to stop breaking our own hearts waiting for them to fix us.

1. Believe Patterns, Not Potential: If he has been with you for years, sleeping in your bed, eating your food, but flinches when you talk about the future? Believe him. The silence is the answer. He is showing you exactly how much he values the relationship.

2. Close the Shop: If marriage is what you want, stop doing “Wife” duties for a “Boyfriend” salary. Stop playing house. And for the love of everything holy, protect your womb. Your DNA is precious. Don’t mix it with someone who treats you like an option.

3. Understand Your Worth: You are not an incubator for a man’s legacy. You are a partner. You are a queen. You deserve someone who wants to wake up next to you every morning and calls you his wife with pride, not someone who just wants a baby mama to manage his offspring.

He didn’t “wife you up” because he didn’t have to. He got the perks without the price tag.

It hurts. God, I know it hurts. It hurts to realize a man doesn’t choose you the way you chose him. It hurts to mourn the wedding you planned in your head. It hurts to look at your child and wish things were different.

But I’d rather you cry now and find a man who worships the ground you walk on later, than spend the next twenty years raising a man-child alongside your actual child, feeling lonely in a crowded house.

You deserve to be someone’s “First Choice,” not just their “Baby Mother.”

Love yourself enough to walk away from anyone who wants a piece of you, but not all of you.

Love,

Tina
