You know that quote—the one that’s been floating around the internet like a digital ghost? “The worst I ever wish on people is that they meet themselves in someone else.” When I first read that, I thought, “Oh, that’s deep. That’s poetic. That’s a sophisticated burn.” I pictured my ex-manager having to deal with a version of himself that also sends “Urgent” emails at 11:45 PM on a Saturday. I laughed. I felt superior.
And then, the universe—which clearly has a very twisted sense of humor—decided it was my turn to look in the mirror.
Last Tuesday, I was standing in line for my third caffeinated liferaft of the day. There was a woman in front of me who was… let’s just say, a lot. She was huffing because the person at the counter was taking “too long” to find their app barcode. She was checking her watch every four seconds, tapping her foot with the rhythmic intensity of a jackhammer, and sighing so loudly it was practically a gale-force wind.
I was rolling my eyes, thinking, “Wow, lady, take a chill pill. We’re all in a rush.”
And then I caught my reflection in the pastry case glass.
I was holding my phone exactly like she was. My foot was tapping at the exact same BPM. I realized that just three days ago, I had done the exact same dramatic sigh at the grocery store because someone dared to pay with actual coins.
I had met me. And honestly? I was kind of a jerk.
Meeting yourself isn’t always about seeing your bad habits, though. Sometimes it’s about seeing your own insecurities or your “quirks” (which is the polite word we use for things that annoy other people).
Have you ever:
• Tried to tell a story to someone who keeps interrupting you, only to realize you’re the World Champion of Interrupters?
• Given “constructive feedback” to a friend, had them give it back to you, and realized it actually just felt like being hit with a wet sock?
• Dealt with someone who is “indecisive” about dinner for forty minutes, only to remember your own “I don’t know, what do you want?” loops from last weekend?
It’s an out-of-body experience. It’s like watching a movie of your life where you aren’t the protagonist; you’re the annoying side character that the audience is rooting against.
The thing is, if we don’t laugh at it, we’ll just end up hiding under our blankets forever. There is something fundamentally hilarious about the human ego. We spend so much time justifying our own behavior (“I’m not being rude, I’m just busy!”) while being absolutely offended when someone else does the exact same thing to us (“They’re so rude! Don’t they know I’m busy?”).
Meeting yourself is the universe’s way of saying: “Hey, look at this. Is this who you want to be? Also, your hair looks weird from the back.”
So, I’ve decided to take this quote as a challenge rather than a curse. Instead of it being the worst thing I wish on someone, I want to make it so that if someone met me in another person, they’d think: “Oh, hey! This person is a little chaotic, drinks too much coffee, and tells mediocre jokes, but they’re actually pretty decent.”
I’m working on it. I’m trying to be the person that I wouldn’t mind standing behind in a slow-moving line.
But if you see me in the wild and I’m doing the “dramatic sigh” again… please, just hand me a mirror. Or a croissant. A croissant usually works better.
What about you? Have you ever had a “Wait… that’s exactly what I do” moment that made you want to crawl into a hole? Tell me I’m not alone in this!
