Hey everyone, Tina here. Pull up a chair, grab a coffee (or something stronger, I don’t judge), and let’s have a real talk.
You know that feeling when you’re sitting at a dinner table, or in a meeting, or even just on a date, and someone says something that is just… wrong? Maybe it’s a subtle dig, a blatant lie, or just a massive pile of disrespect wrapped in a “just kidding” bow. For years, my internal response was to swallow that bitter pill, smile until my cheeks ached, and tell myself, “Don’t make a scene, Tina. Keep the peace.”
Well, consider the peace officially broken.
The Hidden Cost of Keeping the Peace
I realized recently that “keeping the peace” was actually just me paying a massive tax on my own mental health. I was essentially telling everyone else, “Your comfort is more important than my reality.”
I can’t lie anymore: I am hard to deal with. There, I said it. I’ve become that person who doesn’t let things slide. If I saw it, I saw it. I’m not going to let you gaslight me into thinking I’m “remembering it wrong” just because it’s inconvenient for you. I’ve officially outgrown the phase of my life where I let things pass just to avoid an awkward Tuesday afternoon.
Redefining the “Difficult” Label
People love to use the word “difficult” when they really mean “I can’t walk all over you anymore.”
“Oh, Tina’s being difficult again.”
When You Become “Too Much”
Actually, Tina just has a backbone now, and it’s surprisingly shiny! It’s funny, isn’t it? When you start holding people accountable and calling things how you see them, suddenly you’re “too much.” You’re “intense.” You’re “aggressive.”
But here’s the thing I’ve learned: I’d much rather be called “too much” than be played with. I’d rather be the woman who speaks her truth and watches a few people walk out the door, than the woman who stays quiet and loses herself in the process.
The New Math of Relationships
Let’s look at the logic. If I have to shrink myself, silence my intuition, and accept disrespect just to keep you in my life… what exactly am I keeping? A shadow of a relationship? A friendship built on me being a doormat?
No thanks. I’m doing a different kind of math these days.
Old Math vs. New Math
- Old Math: Tina + Silence = Everyone is happy (except Tina).
- New Math: Tina + Truth = Peace of mind (and maybe a smaller Christmas card list).
If that makes me “too much,” then so be it. I’ve realized that the people who truly belong in my life aren’t intimidated by my honesty—they’re refreshed by it. They know that if I have a problem, I’ll say it to their face, not behind their back. There’s a weird kind of comfort in being friends with a “difficult” person; at least you always know exactly where you stand.
Why Integrity Matters More Than Comfort
I won’t stay quiet just to make someone else comfortable anymore. My comfort matters too. My integrity matters more. At the end of the day, I have to go home and look at myself in the mirror. I have to live with my thoughts. And I’ve decided that I’d much rather lose a few people who were only there for the “easy” version of me, than lose the woman I’ve worked so hard to become.
So, here’s to being “too much.” Here’s to the difficult ones, the truth-tellers, and the ones who refused to be played with. It might be a bit lonely at the top of this mountain of honesty, but the view is incredible, and I finally have enough room to breathe.
Do you feel like you’ve been “keeping the peace” at your own expense lately? I’d love to hear about the moment you decided to start speaking up—tell me your story in the comments!
