Sleeping with the Enemy and Other Things I Will Never Understand

Sleeping with the Enemy and Other Things I Will Never Understand

I’m sitting here at my keyboard, looking out at the Eastvale sun, with Daisy snoring softly at my feet like she hasn’t a care in the world. I’ve got my iced Tesora from Philz in hand—heavy on the cream and sugar, because life is bitter enough without drinking it black. At thirty-three, I feel like I’ve seen a fair amount of relationship chaos, but I need the sugar rush today because my mind is spinning over a dynamic that makes absolutely zero sense to me. Welcome back to Stories from Tina. Today, we need to have a serious, sit-down conversation about something that completely baffles me: the sheer, unadulterated paradox of men who claim to passionately hate a woman, but still end up sleeping with her. Seriously, make it make sense. What is the math there?

The Paradox of Intimacy and Resentment

Because maybe it’s just me, but if I truly dislike someone, if I cannot stand the sound of their voice, and if seeing their name pop up on my phone makes me roll my eyes so hard I can see my own brain, sleeping with them is not exactly on my to-do list. Hate is not a “late-night Netflix and chill” emotion; it is a “stay over there, don’t touch my peace, and don’t breathe near my phone” emotion.

Sometimes I think about the sheer anatomy of it all. You don’t need to be staring at a cellular histology slide or memorizing skull structures for a biology exam to recognize when the connective tissue of a dynamic is fundamentally diseased. Intimacy requires a level of vulnerability. To share your physical space with someone you claim to loathe is a massive disconnect between the brain and the body.

How Unresolved Trauma Drives Toxic Connections

I don’t understand how anyone is physically or mentally capable of sleeping with someone they despise. But somehow, there are guys out there who harbor this deep, fiery resentment toward a woman, yet still manage to pull out all the stops to sleep with her. It leaves me wondering if it’s hate with a side of secrecy, or if they are secretly in love but their ego won’t let them admit it. It’s giving middle-school-boy-pulling-the-pigtails-of-the-girl-he-likes, but with adult, real-world consequences that don’t care about your vibes.

The Collateral Damage of Co-Parenting in Conflict

Those consequences are massive because this isn’t just about a confusing late-night hookup. This is about bringing actual human lives into the mix. We are talking about men who not only sleep with the woman they claim to hate, but have an entire child with her—a walking, talking reminder of a lifetime connection.

When Children Absorb the Unspoken Tension

When I look at my own kids—when I watch Maureen or my son just navigating their daily lives—I am acutely aware that children are emotional sponges. They absorb the unspoken tension just as much as the shouting. Yet, instead of stepping up to the plate, these men completely abandon the child or only participate when it benefits them emotionally. The child becomes treated like a receipt for a reckless mistake rather than a whole person who didn’t sign up to be collateral damage. The irony isn’t lost on me: you want to punish the mother, yet you’re not fully present for the innocent child. That gap between what is demanded emotionally and how one shows up practically creates a profound damage.

The Scorched-Earth Campaign Against Family and Friends

What confuses me even more is when the anger starts spreading like a wildfire, turning into a scorched-earth campaign. Instead of dealing with the actual person, the man deals with the whole universe around them, placing everyone—family, mutual friends, innocent bystanders—right in the crossfire. Suddenly, anybody who speaks to the woman, supports her, or acknowledges the child becomes the enemy. People are walking around like they’re participating in some weird emotional version of Survivor, getting voted off the island just for saying hello. These ultimatums are incredibly immature. Instead of acting like an adult and working things out, they go out of their way to block relationships and isolate the woman under the guise of “protecting their peace,” when really, they are just creating a private prison for their own heart.

The Pros and Cons of Emotional Accountability

When you really break down this dynamic, there is a twisted set of pros and cons at play, though they only make sense to a mind desperately trying to avoid accountability. The supposed pros of holding onto this grudge and shutting out the mother might seem appealing in the moment. It offers a false sense of control, provides leverage, and allows a person to avoid the terrifying vulnerability of admitting they were hurt, abandoned, or betrayed. It gives them a convenient scapegoat, meaning they never have to look inward or do the heavy lifting of healing their own unaddressed trauma.

Weighing Fleeting Power Against Lifelong Resentment

But the cons heavily outweigh these fleeting illusions of power. The cons involve the utter exhaustion of maintaining a lifelong resentment, the inevitable alienation of friends and family who get caught in the crossfire, and, most tragically, the profound emotional damage inflicted on a child who has to learn how to read grown-up tension like the weather.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Honest Communication

On the flip side, the pros of actually sitting down for an adult conversation are massive: clarity, peace of mind, mutual understanding, and a healthy co-parenting dynamic that centers the child’s stability. The only real con to honest communication is that it is incredibly uncomfortable, requiring you to swallow your pride, stop hiding half the puzzle pieces, and own your part of the mess.

Why Conflict is Easier Than Clarity

If working in healthcare has taught me anything, it’s that ignoring a physical wound doesn’t magically stitch it up; it just makes it infected. It’s the exact same with emotional wounds. This wall of silence happens because conflict is easier than clarity. Many men find one woman and decide she is responsible for every internal problem they’ve refused to face. If the relationship fails, if he’s miserable, or if he can’t communicate—it’s all her fault. He outsources his conscience and leaves the woman spinning in circles. We are left playing detective, asking ourselves what we missed, why the communication went left, and if we ignored red flags. We end up doing emotional labor for someone who won’t do their half. Sometimes, it feels like they don’t actually hate the woman; they hate what she represents. They hate that she can see through them, that she won’t accept disrespect in exchange for access, and that she refuses to shrink to fit inside their unresolved issues.

Putting in the Real Work for Relationship Repair

Relationships take real, tangible work. It’s about as productive as trying to make a complex meal—like a rich, from-scratch okra soup—by just throwing raw ingredients at the wall and hoping they chop, season, and simmer themselves. You have to put the time in. Mo and I talk about this kind of thing often. Even just managing a household, a marriage, or a social calendar requires basic, straightforward communication. If Mo’s best friend Brian is coming over, or if our friend Ali ends up cancelling weekend plans, we don’t start a silent war; we just talk about it. We adjust. We don’t burn the house down and stop speaking to everyone in the zip code because of a miscommunication.

Holding Everyone Accountable: The Toxic Games We Play

But to keep it entirely real, because Stories from Tina is nothing if not honest, women are not innocent little angels floating around on clouds either. While a woman’s default is usually “let’s talk to repair,” there are absolutely some women out there who love to play games. You know the type: treating relationships like an emotional escape room, setting traps with reverse psychology, and laying out bait just hoping their partner will fall for it. They test people instead of talking to them, speaking in cryptic riddles and believing that mind-reading should be mandatory. When the guy doesn’t fall for the manipulative trap or doesn’t react exactly how they scripted it in their head, these women get furious. It’s a toxic cycle. If you truly knew someone’s heart, you wouldn’t keep hurting them or testing them. Nobody should need a decoder ring to understand your feelings.

Choosing Adult Conversations Over Emotional Chess

At the end of the day, whether it’s a man projecting his internal demons onto a woman and abandoning his child to spite her, or a woman playing emotional chess to test a man’s loyalty, it all boils down to the same root issue: we have got to start communicating like adults. Adult conversations are not a sign of weakness or begging; they are what you do when you actually care about your family’s peace.

Stop sleeping with people you hate, stop punishing children for the sins of their parents, and stop setting traps. If someone hurts you, tell them. If you are angry, express it with your words, not by isolating your family. Life is way too short, and way too complicated, to be actively creating your own misery. Give me peace, give me honesty, and honestly, give me a nap.

  1. In the case of men, most times the man is thinking with other parts of his anatomy than his brain.
