Welcome back to another installment of Stories From Tina. Grab your favorite drink, get comfortable, and let’s talk about one of the most hilariously baffling phenomenons of the digital age.
I’m sitting on the couch here in Eastvale, my sweet little white Shih Tzu, Daisy, is curled up napping next to me, and I’m sipping on my absolute favorite—a Philz Tesora with heavy cream and sugar. I’m minding my own business, casually scrolling through my story views, when I see a familiar name pop up. It’s someone who goes out of their way in real life to act completely unbothered by my existence. Someone who wouldn’t double-tap a picture of mine if their life depended on it. Yet, here they are, within two minutes of me posting, watching my every move.
It reminded me of a quote I saw recently that perfectly sums up this entire ridiculous situation: “Acting like you’re not pressed but keeping tabs on me is INSANE. 🙄” Honestly, where is the lie?
The Anatomy of the Social Media Lurker
There’s a special type of person in this world that deserves to be studied by scientists. Not criminals. Not masterminds. No, I’m talking about the people who swear they’re unbothered while simultaneously keeping Olympic-level tabs on your life. They “don’t care,” but somehow they know who you were with, what you posted, what you deleted, where you went, and probably what brand of toothpaste you switched to. Like… ma’am. Sir. FBI Agent Johnson. Please rest. Because explain to me how you’re “not pressed” but you’re watching my life like it’s the season finale of a Netflix series that got renewed for three more seasons. The math is simply not mathing.
The Four Types of Ghost Viewers
We all have them. The silent watchers. The ghost viewers. The people practically enrolled in the masterclass of Your Life, taking copious notes, yet pretending they don’t even know your name. It’s a bizarre psychological game. If we break it down, there are a few distinct categories of the “Unbothered but Watching” club:
- The Ghost of Relationships Past: They moved on (allegedly). They are thriving (supposedly). Yet, every time you post a boomerang of your dinner or a cute selfie, they are right there in the viewer list. Sir, ma’am, I thought you didn’t care?
- The Competitive Frenemy: This person treats life like a silent competition. They need to know what you’re doing, where you’re traveling, and what milestones you’re hitting to mentally benchmark their own life against yours. They won’t cheer for you, but they are absolutely sitting in the front row.
- The Information Broker: They never like, never comment, and never interact directly. However, they are taking mental (or literal) screenshots and reporting back to a group chat. They treat your Instagram story like the morning newspaper, catching up on the headlines before they start their day.
- The “Accidental” Swiper: My personal favorite. This is the person who claims they “just click through all the stories at once and don’t really watch them.” Sure. That explains why you watched all four of my three-minute rants to the very end.
You ever had somebody bring up information they absolutely should not know unless they were monitoring you like a security camera? “Oh, I saw you went to brunch Saturday.” Excuse me? Who told you that? I posted one tiny boomerang of pancakes for seventeen minutes. That means you were online. Watching. Waiting. Hovering like a raccoon near a trash can.
The Reality Behind the Screen
Here is the funniest part about people keeping tabs on me: I am not some mysterious, flawless spreadsheet of a human being. I am just Tina. If they are tuning in, they are getting a front-row seat to a beautiful, relatable mess.
If they watch closely enough, they’ll see me battling through my General Biology coursework, trying to memorize cell structures while simultaneously making sure my 11-year-old, Noah, actually did his homework. They’ll catch the days where my brain declares a spontaneous dance party after 15 minutes of deep focus, or the moments I completely forget where I put my keys, only to find them in the visor of my car like they’re in witness protection.
They get to see the highlights, too. They see me living my best life at a concert at the Kia Forum, or they catch the sheer chaos of dragging the family to Disneyland just so I can get a picture with Chewbacca.
The Kitchen Chronicles and Daily Chaos
They are definitely watching my “Kitchen Chronicles.” The kitchen is my stage, and the toaster is my reluctant co-star. Sometimes they’ll see me successfully whipping up a traditional Nigerian Okra soup from scratch. Other times, they’ll witness the smoke alarm performing its own opera because I tried to “sear” veggies and caramelized my hopes and dreams instead. That’s usually the cue for Mo and me to look at each other, laugh, and just order a hand-tossed premium chicken and pineapple pizza instead.
They’re keeping tabs on my relationships, which are a lovely mix of compromise, comfort, and weirdness. They might see the daily chaos of wrangling the kids, or a group chat screenshot where I accidentally sent the wrong emoji to my husband’s best friend, Brian, sparking a two-minute existential crisis about whether I’m emotionally available for drama or just emotionally available for coffee. If you’re going to keep tabs on me, you’re going to see a human-shaped reminder that life often feels like one big “oops.”
The Pros and Cons of an Undercover Audience
Living your life openly while knowing you have an undercover audience is a unique experience. When you really think about it, there are definite pros and cons to this weird dynamic, and we have to weigh them out.
The Pros
First off, it’s highly entertaining. Laughter is cheaper than skincare, and watching someone try so hard to pretend they don’t care while knowing your entire routine is premium comedy. You’ll run into them at the grocery store, and they’ll say, “What have you been up to lately?” Meanwhile, they literally viewed my blog post an hour ago.
Secondly, it’s free motivation. Someone keeping tabs on you is just confirmation that you are doing something right. You are living out loud, growing, and experiencing life in a way that is so magnetic, even the people who pretend not to care simply cannot look away. Finally, from a purely practical standpoint, it boosts the algorithm! When I celebrated hitting 541 subscribers on this blog, I couldn’t help but wonder how many of those are the silent watchers. If you’re reading this from the shadows, thanks for the views!
The Cons
Of course, there’s a downside. The biggest con is that the fake nonchalance can feel invasive. It’s the digital equivalent of wearing a fake mustache and holding up a newspaper with eye-holes cut out while standing directly outside someone’s living room window. Another con is the mental energy it tries to steal from you. If you aren’t careful, you can get caught up in the validation of who is viewing your content, playing the “Ha! Gotcha” game instead of just posting for your own joy. Living your life for a silent, judgmental audience is exhausting, and it can make you second-guess sharing those tiny wins that actually make life bright.
Listen, I try to keep it grounded, but my Leo energy simply won’t let me ignore the sheer theater of it all. I completely understand the assignment of putting on a good show—but if you’re going to buy a ticket to the theater of my life, the least you could do is clap!
Protecting Your Peace and Personal Accountability
A big part of what I love to write about here is personal accountability. When it comes to the lurkers, the accountability actually falls on us. Why do we care that they are watching? We have to hold ourselves accountable for our own peace. If someone wants to keep tabs on you while acting totally indifferent, let them. That’s their internal battle, not yours. You don’t have to spend a single ounce of your energy wondering why. Light a smudge stick, burn some sage, clear out that strange spectator energy, and focus back on your own world.
Growth Means Moving Accordingly
The older version of me might have wanted to confront it, decode it, or defend myself against it. The current version of me? I just move accordingly. That’s growth. Not every strange energy deserves a response.
At the end of the day, being watched is weird… but stopping your joy because of watchers is even sadder. So, post the vacation pictures from Mexico or Italy. Share your wins at work or school. Write your essays. Laugh loudly. Glow openly. Heal publicly if you want to.
If you’re reading this and nodding along, you’re not alone. We’re all just stumbling through adulthood with varying degrees of grace. If someone else wants to spend their precious time observing your journey while pretending they aren’t, let them. Give them a good show. And if they’re gonna keep tabs? At least make it entertaining.
Stay shining, Tina
