Hey guys, it’s Tina. Grab a coffee—or something stronger, I’m not judging—because we need to have a little heart-to-heart about the exact moment a person goes from “sweet, accommodating Tina” to “who is this stranger and why is she looking at me like I’m a captcha code she can’t solve?”
You know that feeling? You’re pouring your energy into someone, practically doing backflips to make sure they’re okay, while they’re over there barely doing the bare minimum. You tell them, “Hey, when you do X, it makes me feel like Y,” and they respond with the emotional depth of a damp paper towel.
Well, I hit that wall recently. And let me tell you, once I realize you honestly do not give a flip about how your actions affect my peace of mind? A door slams shut so loud it rattles the neighbors.
Phase 1: The Benefit of the Doubt (The “Bless Your Heart” Stage)
I am a chronic over-extender. I’ll see a red flag and think, “Oh, that’s not a red flag, that’s just a festive banner! Maybe they’re just having a bad week. Maybe they didn’t realize that ignoring my text for three days while posting on Instagram was rude.” I try to communicate. I use “I” statements. I’m out here sounding like a licensed therapist, trying to bridge the gap. I give you the blueprint to my heart and even point out the “fragile” stickers.
Phase 2: The Epiphany
But then, it happens. The moment of clarity. It’s usually something small—a look, a dismissive comment, or another “sorry you feel that way” (the ultimate villain phrase).
Suddenly, I see it. You aren’t “clueless.” You aren’t “busy.” You just don’t care. You see the hurt, you see the effort, and you’ve decided it’s not worth the price of admission to change your behavior.
Phase 3: Meeting the “New” Me
Once that realization clicks into place, the “Old Tina” leaves the building. She didn’t move out; she’s just in the witness protection program now.
When I say you get a whole different me, people often think that means I’m going to be mean or start a fight. Honestly? That takes too much energy. The “different me” is actually way more terrifying:
The Emotional Vault
I stop sharing. You get the weather report and “LOL” texts, but you lose access to my inner thoughts.
The Boundary Wall
Remember when I’d drop everything to help you? Now, I’m “booked and busy” (even if I’m just staring at a wall eating cereal).
The Mirror Effect
I start matching your energy. You’re cold? I’m an ice cube. You’re distant? I’m in another galaxy.
Why Reallocating Your Energy Matters
It’s not about being petty (okay, maybe 5% petty, I’m human). It’s about survival. You can’t keep the same version of yourself available to someone who treats your feelings like a suggestion rather than a priority. It’s like trying to keep a fire going in a rainstorm—eventually, you just get cold and tired, and you realize you’re better off going inside where it’s dry.
So, to anyone currently experiencing the “New Tina”: I’m not mad. I’m just done. I’ve realized that my “give-a-damn” is a limited resource, and I’m officially reallocating the budget to people who actually know what to do with it.
Moral of the story: If you like the version of someone who cares, maybe try… you know… caring back? It’s a wild concept, I know.
Do you have a “switch” that flips when you realize someone is taking you for granted? Tell me I’m not the only one who goes from 100 to 0 real quick!
