Okay, friends. Grab your coffee, your wine, your green juice, or whatever gets you through the chaos of a Tuesday. We need to talk.
You guys know me. You know my life is… let’s call it “textured.” Between raising a son & a daughter, dealing with The Ex Files (we’re not naming names today because I am choosing peace), and trying to keep my head above water without ruining my eyeliner, I don’t always have time to sit down and read a whole book cover-to-cover. Usually, by the time I hit the pillow, I’m doom-scrolling until I pass out.
But then I picked up “Touching Fire: From the Flames of Addiction to the Beauty of Redemption” by Kelsey J. Harris.
And I didn’t put it down. I literally couldn’t. The laundry sat there judging me. The dishes waited. I didn’t care.
The “Touching Fire” Experience
I need to tell you about this book because, honestly? It felt less like reading and more like sitting across the table from a friend who is finally, finally telling you the truth. You know how we all walk around with our polite masks on? Kelsey J. Harris takes that mask, sets it on fire, and then walks you through the ashes.
Let’s be real for a second. There are a million “motivational” books out there written by people whose biggest struggle was their barista getting their oat milk latte wrong. This is not that book.
From Skid Row to the Beauty of Redemption
Kelsey takes us to the pavement. Literally. We are talking about Skid Row in Los Angeles—one of the hardest, darkest places in America. She talks about a life where, in her own words, “No one was my friend. No one was safe. Nothing was off limits.”
Can you imagine living like that? Twelve arrests in four years. The kind of darkness where you forget what sunlight looks like. Reading her story, I felt this tightness in my chest because we’ve all been in a hole, right? Maybe your hole wasn’t Skid Row. Maybe your hole was a bad relationship, a job that drained your soul, or just that feeling that you’ve messed up so bad you can never go back.
What makes Touching Fire so incredible isn’t just the tragedy—it’s the absolute, gut-wrenching resilience. It’s about the strength it takes to look at a life that is completely burned to the ground and say, “I am going to build something beautiful here.”
The Pride of a Leo vs. The Power of Vulnerability
I’m a Leo. You guys know how we are. We are the queens of the jungle. We run on pride, loyalty, and a little bit of flair. We like to look like we have it all together—mane perfectly groomed, roaring at the world, protecting our cubs. We don’t like to show weakness. We don’t like to admit when we’re hurt.
Even a Lioness Can Get Wounded
But that’s exactly why this book floored me.
Kelsey strips away all that pride. There is a vulnerability in her writing that is rare and terrifying and beautiful. She doesn’t paint herself as a hero from page one. She shows you the ugly parts. She exposes the dark corners of the addictive lifestyle not to shock you, but to show you that redemption is actually possible.
It reminded me that even a Lioness can get wounded. And more importantly, it proved that you can heal. That’s the “motivational” part that actually worked on me. It wasn’t a cheesy quote on a sunset background. It was the hard proof that a human being can endure the worst and come out the other side with grace.
True Self-Care: Feeding Your Brain the Right Story
I finished this book with tears in my eyes—happy tears, sad tears, “I’m overwhelmed by the human spirit” tears. It made me look at my own struggles (and trust me, the drama is real) and think: If she can rise from those ashes, I can handle today.
We talk a lot about “self-care” in this blog. Usually, that means a bubble bath or blocking toxic people. But sometimes, self-care is feeding your brain a story that reminds you of who you are. This book is that reminder. It reminds you that you are not your mistakes. You are not your past. You are what you build from the fire.
Why You Need to Read This Book
Go Get It. Seriously.
I don’t get anything for telling you this. I’m just telling you because good stories save lives, and I think this one might save a few of us from our own cynicism.
If you’ve ever felt stuck, if you’ve ever felt like you’ve burned your bridges, or if you just need to be reminded that the human spirit is tougher than a two-dollar steak, go buy “Touching Fire.”
Support independent authors who are brave enough to bleed on the page for us. Kelsey J. Harris deserves to be heard, and frankly, you deserve to hear her.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go tackle that laundry mountain. But I’m doing it with a little more fire in my belly today.
