A Journey Through Time

Hello everyone, it’s Tina here. Today, I’d like to take you on a journey, not through physical space, but through the winding and often obscured path of self-discovery and identity. The question that has been on my mind lately is, “Are there times I’ve felt I’ve lost my sense of self? Why?”

I believe in the power of storytelling, and I am here to share my story of the times when I felt like I was losing my sense of self.

The Corporate Grind: Losing Identity in the Adult World

The first instance occurred in my early twenties. Fresh out of college, I stepped into the adult world with dreams and aspirations in my eyes, only to be met with the harsh realities of adulthood. The job I had envisaged was nothing like the reality. My colleagues were competitive, the hours were long, and I was constantly under stress.

The Erosion of Passion

This immense pressure and the draining environment began to erode my sense of self. I felt like I was losing touch with who I was. I was no longer the vibrant, passionate woman I used to be. Instead, I was becoming a version of myself I hardly recognized.

Why the Self Fades in High-Pressure Environments

But why did this happen? I believe it was because I was trying to fit into a mold that wasn’t meant for me. I was trying to become someone I wasn’t, just to survive in the corporate world.

The Transition to Motherhood: When ‘Mom’ Becomes the Only Label

Another time I felt like I was losing myself was when I became a mother. Don’t get me wrong, bringing a new life into the world is the most beautiful experience, but it also brought along its own set of challenges. Suddenly, my life was no longer about me. My needs, my dreams, my desires all took a back seat.

Disappearing into the Role of Caregiver

I was so engrossed in taking care of my little one that I forgot to take care of myself. I felt like I was disappearing, my identity was fading, and I was just “mom.”

The Struggle of Balancing Self and Family

Why did this happen? I believe it was because I was so consumed by my new role that I forgot about the person I was before becoming a mother. I was so focused on being the perfect mother that I neglected my own needs and desires.

Lessons Learned: Prioritizing Mental Health and Self-Care

These experiences taught me valuable lessons. I learned that it’s okay to prioritize myself, to chase my dreams, and to take care of my mental health. I learned that it’s okay to step back and reassess my life and my choices.

Rediscovering Strength and Resilience

Losing my sense of self wasn’t a pleasant experience, but it led me to rediscover who I truly am. It reminded me of my strength, my resilience, and the fire within me that refuses to be extinguished.

Encouragement for the Journey of Rediscovery

So, if you’re going through a similar journey, remember, it’s okay to feel lost. It’s okay to question your identity. It’s okay to take a step back and rediscover yourself. Because at the end of the day, our experiences shape us, and losing ourselves only paves the way for us to find who we truly are.

Until next time,

Tina
